To some, it is recognisably a necklace, but its scale and sheer physical presence push it away from conventional adornment. The individual ceramic components have an almost anatomical quality, reminiscent of something visceral, or ancient.

Repetition transforms these individual forms into one larger, flexible, object, shifting the work between jewellery, sculpture and relic. Belonging to the body, but also existing beyond it.

Like all of our Earth's materials, the dead feeds the living, and it returns from where it came. And so it goes. The work considers this continual cycle of matter, and the ways in which objects can hold traces of what came before. Teeth, was realised during this process of devotion and memory, using the language of adornment to create something that feels both intimate, celebratory, and primitive (primordial can be used here if preferred).

—

Nastja Zarić is a ceramic artist and jeweller, living in Melbourne, Australia. Working between adornment and sculpture, her practice explores the space between the wearable and the object. She works instinctively across ceramics, silver, stone and found materials, often starting with recognisable motifs and shifting them through scale, material and repetition.

Zarić’s approach is informed by a Yugoslav family lineage of making and resourcefulness, where objects were repaired, repurposed and kept close rather than discarded. This sensibility continues in a practice that is as interested in remnants as it is in preciousness, and a focus on hand making with earth-driven clay.

Her work moves between the intimate, sentimental, playful, and honoured. Rather than belonging neatly to one category, the work occupies the space between them—where an object can be both adornment and artefact.

—

Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026

5 September – 3 October

Following the success of last year's prize, Craft is delighted to continue our partnership with Mud Australia to present the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026.

The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize (SSCP) was established in 2020 by Mud Australia Founder and Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, to support and champion the next generation of Australian ceramicists.

Presented in partnership with Craft Victoria, the annual prize is open to ceramic artists working across functional ware, fine art, handcrafted objects and broader commercial ceramic practices.
