Louise Meuwissen — Golden Pearl and Silver Earrings
Australian artist and craftsperson Louise Meuwissen's works are renowned for their lavish and intricate surfaces. Employing traditional textile techniques of embroidery and fabric manipulation, she creates pieces made exclusively from recycled and sustainably sourced materials. Her practice is underpinned by treasure hunting and collecting, and informed by her interests in devotion and the sublime, luxury, aspiration, the natural world and environmental concerns.
Meuwissen's work delicately combines contemporary, vintage and antique textiles and materials such as gemstones, pearls, glass and plastic. Using shibori binding or painting with needle and thread, these are compiled with great time and care in aim of reinstating their preciousness as objects to be treasured.
Her textiles and jewellery showcased at Craft Victoria are distillations of her large-scale sculptural work, each piece being a one-of-a-kind work of art or special limited edition designed to adorn the body.
Meuwissen's work has been exhibited extensively in Australia and New Zealand. Recent projects have been presented at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Wangaratta Art Gallery, Craft Victoria, Spring 1883 and Sydney Contemporary, and as part of VAMFF and Melbourne Design Week. She has recently conducted workshops with the NGV, Royal Melbourne Show, and Kingston Arts.
