Cassie Leatham is from the Taungurung and Wurundjeri people. Cassie’s biological grandfather George (Patterson/Fisher) was a Taungurung man and her biological grandmother Alice Stevens was a Wurundjeri woman. Cassie grew up knowing her biological grandparents as her uncle and aunty, as Cassie’s father Ron was adopted at birth and placed in the care of Cassie’s biological grandfather’s sister and her husband. Cassie was born on GunaiKurnai country and takes pride and place in the local community and is a member of Ramahyuck in Sale Gippsland.
Cassie always knew there was a connection and once she confirmed her Aboriginality she started her journey embracing her culture and teaching and facilitating workshops in art techniques, mosaic murals, linocut and printmaking, basket weaving, Bush Tucker, wood burning, natural jewellery making and other various mediums and also curating exhibitions and facilitating workshops in numerous schools.
It’s nurturing culture and heritage and respecting the land that is important to Cassie, and nurturing the Aboriginal children who will one day become elders.
