Anastasia La Fey

Anastasia La Fey — 'Light Trap 03', 2024

$2,750

The Light Traps are an extension of a series of ephemeral material investigations undertaken during 2019/2020 whilst on residency in Orquevaux (Northern France) where I created a series of textile sculptures that were positioned to "trap" and "emanate" sunlight with the intent of working with light as both medium and collaborator.

Silk possesses a lustre that is unlike all other natural textiles – the luminous appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, allowing the cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing shimmer and colour, as well as enabling both the "trapping of" and ability to appear to "emanate" light.

My work with textiles is deeply rooted in the shared connection of humans to cloth - second to human touch, our first tactile experience is with cloth, thus we have a deep, subconscious, and often emotional relationship to it. The works appear as both object and creature.

Anastasia La Fey is an independent, multidisciplinary artist, whose practice crosses realms of textile artistry, inhabitable sculpture, tactile installation, photographic, ephemeral, environmental, and collaborative cross-disciplinary multi-form works.

With a background as a couturier and costumier, from late 2016 her focus shifted to pursue an art-based practice, dedicating herself to an experimental, cross-disciplinary approach that would free her from being locked into any one particular way of making things.

This has allowed more space for going into the unknown and the freedom to be imperfect.

Her practice is, at its very heart, exploratory and experimental – central themes include concepts of inhabitation, isolation, transmutation, disquiet, dissolution, and relationship to self and the environment. Materiality, ephemerality, and tactility are also key elements of her work.
