Danielle Thiris — Mini Athenian Cow Hoof Cup Black Limited Edition

To celebrate Vessels, NGV design store and Craft have curated a small selection of participating artists to produce a limited-edition retail offering exclusive to NGV design store and Craft.

Inspired by her work included in Melbourne Now Souvlaki whispers, 2023, is a conjoined vessel that pays homage to three ancient pots: a German drinking vessel (c. 1400); a Chinese Neolithic cup (c. 1800 BCE); and a Greek Kylix pot (c. 500 BCE). With a reverence for history, humanity and culture, this hybrid work is a celebration of the universal language of pots and the human impulse to create vessels to carry and hold – whether for utilitarian, spiritual or aesthetic purposes.

Danny Pistachio is the work of Naarm/Melbourne based ceramic artist Danielle Thiris. Influenced by her Cypriot and Greek Heritage her practice explores prehistoric vessels, ceremonial objects and nature (human, animal and plant). Thiris uses a South Australian terracotta clay and hand builds her pieces using a combination of traditional techniques, such as coiling, pinching and carving.

Thiris exhibited as part of NGV Melbourne Design Week, 2021 & 2022. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of South Australia and a Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT.

For Melbourne Now, the NGV and Craft have identified artists, craftspeople and designers whose creative practices have been informed by their exploration of the vessel in contemporary culture, with each practitioner producing an ambitious new work that is emblematic of their conceptual focus and skill. Vessels presents a snapshot of contemporary craft and making in Melbourne - the presentation hints at the breadth of material research that is being refined and shared by Melbourne's creative community.
