Anna Varendorff, ACV studio — Invertible Brass Vase Mini Limited Edition

To celebrate Vessels, NGV design store and Craft have curated a small selection of participating artists to produce a limited-edition retail offering exclusive to NGV design store and Craft.

Mini Invertibles are vessels that function in multiple directions. Conceptualised as creatures, companions and interlocutors, these abstract vessels are designed to hold a range of contents, with their large stature supporting all manner of objects.

A self-confessed fan of ‘finding stuff left by others on the footpath’, Varendorff evokes the language of found objects with the Invertibles, imagining them being used, adapted and interpreted by people in their own ways.

Anna Varendorff is an artist and designer working in Naarm/Melbourne. She works with conceptual jewellery, installation, sculpture, design and production and has amassed an almost cult following for her distinctive curved brass sculptures, created under the name ACV Studio. Her practice is inspired by many other artists and creatives, particularly those whose work encourages a direct relationship between the object and the audience.

Varendorff has exhibited in Australia and Internationally since 2004 including at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) and with Local Design in Milan in 2017, 2018 and 2019. ACV Studio's work 'Glass Half Full Vase' was the winner of a 2018 Wallpaper* Designer Of The Year Award.

people and designers whose creative practices have been informed by their exploration of the vessel in contemporary culture, with each practitioner producing an ambitious new work that is emblematic of their conceptual focus and skill. Vessels presents a snapshot of contemporary craft and making in Melbourne - the presentation hints at the breadth of material research that is being refined and shared by Melbourne's creative community.

Vessels is on at Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia Fed Square until 20 August 2023

Material: brass

Dimensions: 20cm x 11cm x 21cm variable

Cleaning: The vessel can be cleaned with brass cleaning products, but we recommend cleaning with tomato sauce and an abrassive kitchen scourer, washing with mild soap afterwards and drying immediately. This is the least toxic cleaner for brass we know of.
