Ash Allen — Miss Havisham's chandelier, 2022

Functional and striking, a 6 lamp chandelier formed from blue flocked welded mesh steel. "I wanted to create an effeminate household setting for the Blue Show and ended up making this blue flocked table, chair, handbag and chandelier. I had in my mind's eye Miranda Priestly - the fearful boss from "The Devil wears Prada" at home enjoying her regal space with her prized possessions. The lonely Miss Havisham, from Great Expectations, for some reason also came to mind. The colour blue is associated with strength in business, but depression on a personal level. Quite appropriate for Miranda I think. I have been playing with welded steel mesh for a while now., and am taken by its inherent strength, malleability and negative space. I think the ghostly forms that can be created with it, especially once softened with flock, are quite emotive and textural. The diamond patterns in these pieces are a subtle reference to quilt patterns evident in finely upholstered furniture and leather goods"
