Katie-Ann Houghton — Hand Blown Gold Rimmed Drinking Glass
Designed and handcrafted by Katie-Ann Houghton, KAH aims to challenge the culture of mass consumption by creating work with innovative design and handmade quality. Katie’s design philosophy is based around the idea that the objects that we engage with every day should engage our senses and bring us joy through use.
Designed to be both functional and practical, KAH aims to change the conventional expectations of tableware, and have us view each piece as both a piece of contemporary design and an object of use.
Her contemporary works are inspired by early 20th Century Design and embody a decade long passion for traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques.
Completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in 2011, Katie later became a full-time assistant for Sydney based glass artist Ben Edols. While at college and working with Edols, Katie- Ann exhibited her work in several galleries around Sydney and NSW. Also selected to be a part of the National Student Glass Art prize, where her work was acquired into the gallery’s collection. After her time teaching at SCA, Houghton applied and was accepted into the competitive Associate Training Program at Jam Factory in Adelaide. During the two-year program in the Glass Studio at Jam Factory, Katie-Ann focused on developing distinct design elements and refined her craftsmanship. Her hand blown work engages with contemporary Australian design aesthetics, incorporating minimalism, subtle forms and colour.
Each glass is crafted by hand in her studio.
