Belle Thierry — 'Pillar', 2022

$2,450

Pillar, 2022 is an ode to brutalist architecture, capturing an impression of the architectural technique of formwork or 'Beton brut'. An inquiry into process and its effect on material, the work explores the cross disciplines of art and design, a sculpture in its own right with the functionality of a working lamp. Cast using a cylindrical framework of timber sheathes, the process captures the raw impression of timber grain, first in plaster then in translucent porcelain. The delicate porcelain shade is supported by a polished aluminium base, a dichotomy of material, texture and density.

Belle Thierry is a Ceramic artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. Thierry's practice considers the materiality of porcelain, exploring the way material and form affect light, shadow and space. Subdued and minimal her work purposefully omits colour and focuses on the essential gesture of form, highlighting the integral qualities of material, shown in its most authentic state.

Theirry has exhibited at Craft Victoria in 2022 and 2021 and was included in the New Assemblage 'Showcase' for Melbourne Design Week, 2022. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Ceramics) at RMIT, 2021.
