Sustainable design methodologies and environmental concerns are to be embedded into these works at every level. The surfaces of these works take inspiration from the harsh and colourless, bleached paddocks, which are occasionally blanketed by snow in Winter. Alabaster and ivory from the snow and dried grasses and graphite and charcoal from the decaying trees and strange rocks. Simple wheel formed shapes are altered and joined, the surfaces are contrasted with matt and glossy, rough and smooth, hard and soft. While styling interiors, homewares and food shoots Allison became obsessed with vessels and decorative ceramic forms. The foundation shapes of her work are wheel formed then she adds, changes, alters or attaches elements to achieve interesting pieces. As a perfectionist she deliberately avoids this in her ceramic process. Allison has completed a Diploma of Ceramics and in addition to her home studio she creates two days a week in the open studio program at northern beaches TAFE. While styling interiors, homewares and food shoots Allison became obsessed with vessels and decorative ceramic forms. The foundation shapes of her work are wheel formed then she adds, changes, alters or attaches elements to achieve interesting pieces. As a perfectionist she deliberately avoids this in her ceramic process. In Japanese the character ‘Shin’ represents God and ‘Ki’ translates as ‘vessel’. The ceremony is rich in symbolism and is undertaken to mark both an end and a beginning; a demarcation of time that allows new plans to be reborn.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRyujin carefully turns the wood on a lathe to create high-sided bowls, urns and platters based on the forms of sacred Japanese temple vessels. During the long air drying process, the forms begin to shift as the green wood loses moisture. The final dramatic transformation takes place as the timber chars and splits during the unpredictable burning process.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003e—\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eMakiko Ryujin is a Naarm\/Melbourne-based artist and woodturner working with timber to create sculptural objects, vessels, installations, and lighting.  Her practice is informed by her Japanese heritage and draws on the cultural burning ritual, 'Otakiage' – a tradition she observed as a child. The ceremony is rich in symbolism and acts as a collective demarcation of time with the opportunity for plans to be reborn. For the artist, including this burning element in her practice allows her to work alongside and embrace fire’s transformative nature. 'The fire assists the wood in transcending beyond what an artist can do and pulls nature back into the creative process.' Ryujin completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Photography) at RMIT before studying woodworking with mentor Carl Lutz. Ryujin has exhibited locally and internationally and is found in both public and private collections. She grew up at Ji-Mardi and moved to Maningrida community after the birth of her four children. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMarrgawaidj learned to weave from her mother Bulanyjan Topsy Wulambuma and her grandmother Belinyjan Minnie Walambuma. Today she works alongside her sisters, Jennifer Prudence, Margaret Wulambuma and Lorna Jin-gubarrangunyja.
