Growing up in a family of furniture makers, Melbourne based cabinet maker and wood turner, Mark Cedro has been working with and around timber his entire life. Apprentice to celebrated Australian wood turner Ken Wraight, Cedro's practice has developed with an intuitive sense of proportion and high level of finish in his work. His knowledge of Australian timbers means that his selection of wood is linked to the function of the work and each piece is turned by hand in his North Coburg studio before being finished with a homemade beeswax based oil to ensure its congeniality with food. His pieces favour a minimal aesthetic, drawing attention to the inherent richness of wood grains. Smoothly turned surfaces are paired with more textured facets ensuring both the aesthetic and function of the series. Cedro’s stern attention to detail, alludes to the heirloom quality of his work and his engagement with sustainable modes of craftsmanship.
